What is BLAD?
The Business Law Association of Dalhousie (BLAD) is the representative body for students at the Schulich School of Law who are interested in the field of business law. BLAD provides a wide variety of services for students such as hosting networking events with practitioners and organizations in the field of business law, holding educational seminars and speaking events, pairing students with mentors, and holding social events.
BLAD was created in February 2013 by a group of ambitious first-year students whose goal was to create a society that provides students with educational and networking opportunities in the field of business law. Since its founding, BLAD has grown to include more than 65 enthusiastic student members.
Our fundamental purpose is to create a community of students who are interested in, informed about, and connected to business law. Our mission is to provide students with a solid foundation of knowledge regarding the exciting field of business law, expose students to the many opportunities in this field and provide opportunities for law firms to interact with students who are interested in business law.
Meetings have been attended by an engaged and motivated student body, as well as supported by several faculty members including the Chair of the Nova Scotia Security Commission, Sarah Bradley. In March, BLAD organized a networking event in Halifax for students, professors, law firms, and in–house practitioners where the membership learned about the formative experience of progressing from a student to a lawyer. Valuable relationships between students and practitioners were formed and students gained personalized insight into the many different facets of business law.
Michael Levin, a student in the joint JD/MBA program and BLAD member, attended our Kick-Off event:

“The Business Law Association of Dalhousie Kick Off was the best networking event I have attended so far at law school. I felt as though I could be myself and get to know the attendees; a refreshing change from more formal firm receptions. The diversity of practice among attendees was telling of the myriad career paths available within business law. Most importantly I appreciated the camaraderie displayed by those in attendance and their willingness to speak candidly about the profession. I made many valuable contacts and am looking forward to future BLAD events.”
